Cyprus Guide Travel

Anyone who has spent time in Cyprus will know that food is integral to our lives. There is a popular saying that the Cypriots build houses like they will live forever and eat like they are going to die tomorrow.

That is most certainly true; our construction and building is certainly renowned and our food is somewhat legendary, and woe betide anyone who visits a Cypriot’s home and is not hungry. The lady of the house will whip out an array of sweet biscuits, savoury snacks and of course the obligatory bowls of nuts and crisps.

Naturally, you will be offered coffee; but not just any coffee. If you want to really ingratiate yourself with a Cypriot family, you need to learn to drink the “coffee in the small cup.”

Whether it’s after a meal, for breakfast or just because, Cypriot Coffee is an obligatory acquired taste. It takes a while to learn to appreciate the entire experience; from the thicker texture, to the foam on top and especially getting the hang of when to stop, so as not to choke on the dregs at the bottom of the cup. The dregs are in fact essential to the process because that is where your fate and fortune lies; if you are fortunate enough to be in the presence of someone who knows how to “read the cup” you will be expected to pay attention and nod gravely as the lady (for some reason it’s never a man) looks deeply at the cup and sighs wisely as she slowly turns it around and makes all sorts of “hhhmmmm” sounds.

She will then start by telling you that you have some kind of animal in your cup; it will either be a bird, a lion or a snake. Obviously the bird and lion are good (to help you fly up and to give you strength respectively) while the snake is really not good as it means you have an enemy in your midst, who is plotting and conspiring against you.

You will then be told that you are due to hear good news; if the lady knows you have any single friends or if you are indeed single, then you will be told to expect an engagement very soon; of course if there are youngish married couples in your circle, well then they will be expecting a child soon. If you have any older relatives or friends, you will be told something sad will happen soon.

There is always news of some kind; someone will “tell you something” and depending on the carrier of the news, it will either be good or bad. You will be going on a trip, sometimes more than one, and depending on how long the little strips of coffee are in your cup, the trips will be of a short distance or you will travel to somewhere far, far away.
