Sydney Convention Centre Travel Expo
What should be the priority for a tourist visiting Sydney for the first time? Drink in a couple of arias at the Opera House? Hike the Harbour Bridge or ride the waves at Bondi Beach? None of the above. The savvy sightseer should instead hop on the nearest bus.
It is impossible to spend time in Sydney without encountering the bright red ‘Sydney Explorer’ buses which visit 27 sites around the city. One full circuit takes two hours and provides the perfect introduction to the history, culture and chaotic make-up of Sydney.
Museums and Matches
The stops range from particular areas such as Chinatown, The Rocks and Kings Cross (originally called Queen’s Cross but changed when this caused confusion, presumably losing its apostrophe at the same time); and specific attractions such as Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, the Star Casino, Aquarium and a trio of excellent museums: The Australian, Maritime and Powerhouse. The taped commentary is clear and comprehensive, drawing attention to sights such as El Alamein Fountain which commemorates soldiers killed in two Egyptian battles in 1942 and resembles a huge, magnificent dandelion.
