Travel New York London
Concorde managed to fly from London to New York in around 3 hours and 20 minutes. When the supersonic jet retired, however, there was nothing even close to its speed, luxury or prestige with which to take its place. Currently the time taken to fly from London to New York by regular air travel is between 6 – 7 hours, but there are ideas in the wind which could hopefully take flight one day in the not too distant future.
Introducing the Scram Jet
The Scram Jet or Supersonic Combustion Ramjet is part aeroplane, part rocket. Generally, rockets need liquid fuel, which has to be combined with liquid oxygen in order to create thrust, but the Scram Jet takes its oxygen from the atmosphere which passes through it. This also means that, fortunately, its fuel tanks don’t need to be the size of the Empire State Building.
How fast can it go?
Researchers are optimistic that it could achieve up to 24 times the speed of sound, which would mean a flight from New York to Tokyo would be completed in 2 hours or less. London to New York on a Scram Jet might just about give you enough time to finish your breakfast cup of coffee, but you’d have to leave the crossword for lunch.
